Why do LCD Monitors Consume so Much Less Power Than CRTs?

Without getting technical, it is due to how LCD monitors operate – LCD monitors turn individual pixels 'on/off' whereas a CRT continually scans and updates a screen. Furthermore a CRT also sports a lot more ancillary hardware.
